Are the Kleftiko sea caves worth visiting?

At Kleftiko, jagged white rocks tower above the water and sea caves carved into the cliffs are large enough to sail through making this place one of the most unique locations on earth. After Sarakiniko, this magnificent spot is often next on people’s list of places to see in Milos simply because of its incredible natural beauty. It’s definitely worth a visit if you enjoy getting up close to epic landscapes and is an iconic location on the island of Milos.

Where is Kleftiko?

Kleftiko is considered remote as it’s on the far south side of the island and not near any towns or paved roads. Whether approaching by land or sea, this area can take some time to reach, so it’s best to reserve a few hours if you’re planning a visit. If you’re venturing down that way, another attraction nearby is the Sikia Cave, a natural sea cave with a collapsed ceiling that opens to the sky.

How do you get to Kleftiko?

The best way to reach Kleftiko is by boat as it’s more convenient and the views from the sea will be superior to those on land anyway. Many companies offer private charters to the area where your boat will anchor and you can spend a few hours admiring the natural beauty and going for a swim in the pristine water.

We chartered a boat through Salty Rides and chose the full-day option which included a visit to Kleftiko and various other spots around Milos. If you’re confident captaining your own vessel, you can also rent a boat and visit the area on your own.

It’s also possible to reach Kleftiko by land, but this will require venturing off-road and hiking for a bit. However, this option is not recommended by locals as the terrain on this part of the island is home to a local breed of venomous vipers. Probably not worth the risk!

What is there to do at Kleftiko?

The main event at Kleftiko is exploring the giant volcanic rock formations that tower above the sea. Depending on the size of your vessel some of the rocks have sea caves and tunnels that can be traveled through as well.

Another one of the best things to do at Kleftiko is taking time to enjoy the pristine crystal blue waters. It’s the perfect spot to anchor your boat for a few hours and do some sunbathing or snorkeling.

Keep in mind that there’s no actual beach or facilities at Kleftiko — this is solely a swimming spot. This is why it’s best to charter a boat to this area, as you will have access to a bathroom and snacks aboard your vessel. When’s the best time to visit Kleftiko?

Like the rest of the Greek islands, summer is the best time to visit the island of Milos and the Kleftiko caves. This is high season for Greek travel, but for good reason. The warm weather will have you ready to jump in the crystal blue water and then dry off in the heat of the sun. Planning a trip for late spring or early fall is also a good option to avoid some of the crowds while still taking advantage of the warm Mediterranean weather.

High winds are common in the Greek islands, so it’s best to book your boat tour to Kleftiko in the first few days of your trip in case it needs to be rescheduled due to rough seas. You’ll want to see Kleftiko on a calm day to really enjoy all the area has to offer.

It’s also important to consider the time of day. The best time to visit Kleftiko is around noon when the sun is high. The bright sunlight will make the vibrant blues of the water pop.
