Best spots to get photos with blue domes in Santorini

Where are the blue domes in Santorini?

You know you want one. One of those classic images with blue domes overlooking the sea on the cliffs of Santorini. Hard to believe, but they really do exist! And they’re not too hard to find. Read on to find out where to go to get a photo with the blue domed churches of Oía and some other lesser known spots for getting that perfect pic.

#1 The Blue Domed Churches of Oía

This place tops the list as the most popular photo spot with the blue domes — and really all of Santorini. In order to find this location, you’ll have to visit Oía on the northern tip of the island. Many people stay here as it’s home to Santorini’s most luxurious hotel properties. The path to these churches is on the south side of the main walkway through town. There’s various angles to approach, but keep in mind you’ll be walking directly past private patios of the surrounding hotels. Trying to avoid crowds? Go at sunrise. Even then, there will still be a small line.

#2 Church of Agios Nikolaos

This second spot is actually very close to the first. Keep walking on the main path through Oía until you get near the end. The steps to the left will begin to descend as you head toward the stairs to Ammoudi Bay. You can grab a great shot of this church in the background as you pass by it on the walkway.

Blue domed church of Imerovigli in Santorini, Greece

#3 Blue domed church of Imerovigli

This blue domed church and overlook is located in the little town of Imerovigli that’s situated right behind Skaros Rock. It’s called the Church of the Resurrection of our Lord, and the best way to find it is to actually walk the Fira to Oía trail that runs right through town. As you round the corner just south of Agios Georgios Chapel, you can’t miss it on your left. Head up the stairs to reach the path above the chapel for some spectacular views out across the sea.

#4 The Three Bells of Fira

Another post-card famous spot is the Three Bells of Fira. This is a popular stop for cruise passengers because of its proximity to the port. To locate this church, you will have to visit the town of Fira. There’s parking in a large lot near Firostefani Central Square. Walk south past the square and up the winding road just past the bus stop. You will run into this church at the top of the hill. There are usually a few people milling about, but if you wait you can get a nice shot with the church and the view.

#5 Blue domed church of Megalochori

We loved this quiet spot in the traditional Greek village of Megalochori — plus it’s a package deal. Next to the church is also a charming bell tower that arches over the road. Just walk the main path through town (either direction) and you won’t miss it. If you have time for a meal, there are some wonderful restaurants just south of this location in the main square.

#6 Church of St. John in Imerovigli

Okay, so technically this one isn’t a blue dome photo op, but it’s a church, so we figured it still fits on the list. This little chapel sits below the larger Agios Georgios church in Imerovigli. Follow the path down as if you're making the trek out to Skaros Rock, and you’ll run into it. The views back across the water with the town of Oía in the distance are spectacular.
